eSIM for Turkey: prices, 5G, the IMEI rule and what tourists need
What a travel eSIM for Turkey (Türkiye) costs, how coverage holds up from Istanbul to Cappadocia, and what the 120-day phone registration rule means for a visitor.

An eSIM for Turkey is a prepaid data plan you install on your iPhone before you travel, so you're online when you land at Istanbul or Antalya without buying a Turkish SIM card or registering your phone. Mobile coverage is strong in the cities and along the coast, and 5G switched on across the country in April 2026. With Cabin Mode, 10 GB for 30 days costs well under the price of a taxi from the airport, which is enough for most trips of one to two weeks.
Turkey is one of the cheaper countries in the catalog per GB. It also has one rule no other destination in this series has: the IMEI registration limit. Both are covered below.
What a Turkey eSIM costs
These are the standard Turkey plans at 1 GB and above. In the app the destination is listed as Türkiye.
| Data | Valid for | Price (USD) | Per GB |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 GB | 7 days | $0.99 | $0.99 |
| 3 GB | 15 days | $2.78 | $0.93 |
| 3 GB | 30 days | $2.84 | $0.95 |
| 5 GB | 30 days | $4.60 | $0.92 |
| 10 GB | 30 days | $6.42 | $0.64 |
| 20 GB | 30 days | $13.18 | $0.66 |
| 50 GB | 30 days | $30.76 | $0.62 |
| 50 GB | 180 days | $32.96 | $0.66 |
Prices checked 25 September 2026; the app shows current prices in your currency.
You'll also see plans labelled Premium at most sizes, usually priced a little higher. The app shows what each plan includes; beyond that we don't publish claims about which network a particular plan runs on. For a first trip the standard plans are the obvious starting point.
Because the gap between 5 GB and 10 GB is under $2, there's little reason to buy less than 10 GB for anything longer than a long weekend. See all current Turkey plans. Other countries on the same trip are on the destinations page.
Most Turkey plans start on first connection to a Turkish network, not on install. A small 100 MB plan is the exception; the plan screen says which rule applies before you pay.
The 120-day IMEI rule, in plain terms
Turkey registers phones by their IMEI (the hardware identifier). As of 2026, a foreign phone used with a Turkish SIM works for 120 days; after that, the phone itself is blocked on all Turkish networks unless it has been registered and the fee paid. The fee rises every year and was reported at around 54,000 lira for 2026, which is more than most phones are worth.
For a tourist, the relevant points:
- The rule is aimed at phones using a Turkish SIM subscription. A travel eSIM is a foreign profile roaming on Turkish networks, and multiple guides report that it doesn't start the 120-day clock for a normal visit. We can't give legal guarantees about a regulator's rule, but short tourist trips on a roaming eSIM are the common case, and they are not what the registration fee targets.
- If you're staying close to or beyond 120 days, or you come back several times a year, check the current rules with a Turkish operator or the regulator (BTK) before relying on any eSIM or SIM.
- Install before you arrive. Some travellers report that installing and activating eSIMs from inside Turkey is less reliable. Installing at home on Wi-Fi avoids the question entirely.
Your own SIM roaming in Turkey is unaffected by any of this either way; it's a question of cost, not access.
5G and coverage
As of 2026, Turkey has three mobile networks: Turkcell, Türk Telekom and Vodafone. Commercial 5G launched on 1 April 2026, switched on in all 81 provincial centres on the same day. Coverage outside those centres is still being built, so expect most of your time on 4G through the rest of 2026. 4G in Turkish cities is fast enough that you won't notice the difference for maps, messaging or video calls.
Strong coverage:
- Istanbul, including both sides of the Bosphorus and the ferries across it
- Ankara, Izmir, Antalya and Bursa
- The Aegean and Mediterranean resort coast: Bodrum, Marmaris, Fethiye, Kaş, Kalkan, Side, Alanya
- Main intercity highways and airports
Weaker coverage:
- Stretches of the Lycian Way and other long-distance walking routes between villages
- The valleys around Cappadocia away from Göreme, Ürgüp and Uçhisar, which are themselves well covered
- Mountain roads in the east and the Black Sea highlands
- Boat trips along the coast once you're out of sight of the towns
Download offline maps for any hiking or driving day. On a gület or day boat, don't count on signal between coves.
How much data for Turkey
Istanbul is a heavy-data city. You'll navigate constantly, translate menus and signs, check ferry times, and use ride-hailing and food delivery apps. Resort trips use much less.
- Istanbul city break, 4–5 days: 3–5 GB
- One to two weeks, Istanbul plus Cappadocia or the coast: 6–10 GB
- Two weeks on a resort, mostly on hotel Wi-Fi: 3–5 GB
- Working remotely, or hotspotting a laptop: 20 GB or more
At $6.42 for 10 GB, the cost of overbuying is small. The trade-off in our data guide matters less here than in more expensive destinations.
Istanbul arrival
Istanbul Airport (IST) and Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) are both a long way from the old city, and the trip in is where data helps most: checking the Havaist or Havabus coach, following the M11 metro from IST, or matching a taxi's route against your map.
Install the eSIM at home, before the flight. When you land, turn off airplane mode, make sure the eSIM is selected for Mobile Data, and check Data Roaming is on for the eSIM line. It should connect to a Turkish network before you reach passport control. The full steps, with screenshots, are in how to install an eSIM on iPhone.
On your home line, turn Data Roaming off. Turkey is outside the EU roaming zone, so European plans usually don't include it, and pay-as-you-go roaming here can be expensive.
Do you need a Turkish phone number?
For most visits, no. Hotels, tour companies and restaurants in tourist areas communicate readily over WhatsApp, which keeps working on your normal number over the eSIM's data. Your usual SIM stays in the phone for calls and texts, including bank verification codes.
A travel eSIM is data only, with no Turkish number. The situations where a local number helps are longer stays: signing up for some local delivery apps, residence paperwork, or a Turkish bank account. For those, a local SIM (with the IMEI rule in mind) is the right tool; the trade-offs are in eSIM vs roaming vs a local SIM.
Turkey with Greece or a wider Europe trip
Turkey sits next to the Greek islands, and plenty of trips combine them: a ferry from Bodrum to Kos, Kuşadası to Samos, or Çeşme to Chios.
- Two eSIMs: a Turkey plan plus a Greece plan is usually cheapest. Your iPhone holds both; switch the Mobile Data line when you cross. See our Greece eSIM guide.
- One regional plan: the "Europe(30+ areas)" plan includes Turkey and Greece plus most of Europe. 10 GB for 30 days was $19.80 on 25 September 2026. The plan simply named "Europe" also lists Turkey. Not every Europe plan does, so check the country list on the plan screen before buying. Best eSIM for Europe goes through the options.
Hotspot and usage
You can share the eSIM's data with a laptop or a travel companion's phone through Personal Hotspot. With data this cheap it's a reasonable way to keep two phones online on one plan, as long as you're together most of the day.
Usage figures in the app lag the network by one to three hours. If you top up, the data is added to the same eSIM, with nothing to reinstall. If you're staying a while, eligible 30-day plans can be switched to an optional monthly plan that tops up the same line each month; you can cancel it in the app.
Frequently asked questions
Does an eSIM work in Turkey?
Yes. A travel eSIM connects to Turkish mobile networks as soon as you land, as long as your iPhone is an XR or later and carrier-unlocked. Install it before you travel.
Do tourists need to register their phone in Turkey?
Registration applies to foreign phones used with a Turkish SIM for more than 120 days. Multiple guides report that roaming travel eSIMs don't trigger it on a normal tourist visit. For stays near 120 days, check the current rules before you go.
Is there 5G in Turkey?
Yes. As of 2026, 5G launched on 1 April 2026 in all 81 provincial centres, including Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir and Antalya. Most areas outside city centres still run on 4G.
How much data do I need for a week in Istanbul?
Around 3–5 GB for most visitors. Istanbul trips use more data than beach holidays because of constant navigation, translation and ride-hailing.
Can I use my Turkey eSIM in Greece?
A Turkey-only plan works only in Turkey. For a trip across both, add a Greece plan or choose a regional Europe plan that lists both countries.
Is it cheaper to buy a SIM card at Istanbul Airport?
A tourist SIM at the airport requires passport registration, and prices vary. A travel eSIM is set up before you fly and keeps your own SIM in the phone. For long stays, a local SIM can work out cheaper per GB.
